A new life in the west.

31st January 2012: I had to leave the east side of Singapore and move to the West to live. When I received my posting, (I admit) my heart sank. To those whom I've spoken to, you should know why I felt that way. I'm learning to appreciate what God gave me and not always demand for the best. Just like one of my friends who commented on my fb status. God gives me what i need not what I want.

Indeed it is a privilege for me to me studying @ such a awesome school in such an awesome boarding school. (photos will be taken when I get back my windows phone! )

What's best is this is a christian sch and hostel which means practically 365 days we will b praying tgth before dinner and be having devotions and worship sessions every week. amazing huh? This will definitely help me and remind me of what God has done in my life.

Today was the first day of school - orientation. Orientation will be held till Friday. Jc 2s were really friendly, enthu and outgoing. They were so high! Can't imagine myself being like tt next year but i certainly do wish to forge friendships like how they are with one another..

Definitely, I still brood about Jae's posting about my school but i must belive that God has a better plan for me. I really did not see this coming. Therefore, i'm excited for my journey ahead and at the same time worried. However as the Word says :

NIV Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

NLT Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

As you guys know, O levels results were released last Monday. It was a memorable experience as all of us held hands in the air-conditioned hall while anticipating for the final moment. Our principal started by revealing the statistics of the entire cohort's performance. And then, the Top Students.

Honestly, my heart dropped when I did not see my name on the first four slides of top students. Those pages revealed those students who managed to score 10,9,8,7 A1s.

When I did not see my name up there, i freaked out. Composed exterior, frenzied interior. Indeed, I felt glad for three of my good girl friends for getting 10 & 9A1s. It was not an easy feat. Yet at the same time, I envied them. & was constantly questioning myself about my performance. As the top students went to take photographs with the vips, I sat there, reflecting in disappointment, not prepared to face the reality.

Finally, it was my turn. I went to my form teachers, signed my name, and they handed me my results. " Good job, Janice. This is very good results."

I looked down, skimmed through the grades, and let out a sigh of relief. My lips curved into a smile. My furrowed brows no longer tensed. "Thank God,"I whispered. Well it wasn't that bad, at least, I still managed to get straight As (: Praise the Lord!

Of course, initially, I wasn't satisfied. I was angry at myself and jealous at others who did exceptionally well. What happened to me? I thought crossly to myself.

At the end of the day, I prayed and prayed and asked God for forgiveness for behaving as such. I thanked Him for His endless grace upon me, for without God's guidance and wisdom, I definitely would not have made it.

So, thank you Jesus. For the next chapter of my life, whatever JC i go to, let your will be done in my life. For this life has been dedicated unto you and I will obey you and bring glory to your name.

it's passed christmas & we're finally back in our dear country, Malaysia.

So where did the Soh family elope to for christmas?

Yeap, we went to somewhere not too far away, just a stone's throw away from our country.

The bustling-city of Thailand! Yes, it's Bangkok!

I guess tons of you have been there for like tons of times but to us, it's our first. And it will definitely not be the last. So let's get started (:

So we went with this few luggage. Our luggage were still half empty for we know that when we return, it will be packedy-pack and we even came home with extra bags :D

took express train to Phraya Thai and them BTS to Siam Station. Our hotel was right in the heart of Bangkok, surrounded by a deluge of food stalls, night market and shopping malls!

Met JayJay, my personal tour guide! hehe, so funny la he. He brought us to really nice restaurants (all high class one,because he is damn rich) haha and good malls to shop and finally after shopping to some Thai massage!

then off to one of Thai's best seafood restaurant! A must go if you visit Bangkok! Somboon Seafood Restaurant. Thumbs up for everything!

Tuk-tuk! After dinner, must enjoy the cold weather. the breeze at night is amazing albeit the polluted air was bringing harm to our skin and breathing systems haha.

Midnight stroll. But people are still flooding the streets! Indeed, a city which never sleeps.

YES! It's true. Sushi buffet again.

Last weekend just had sushi buffet with family and I had it again with s few of my friends on Wednesday.

I was too sick and jelak of wed's hostel's dinner which is western food so we headed to parkway to have sakae sushi.

I forced him to put the entire thing in his mouth and pull it like how we usually do but he kept insisting that it was gross because it was hairy -.-

back to business.

It's been a long long time since I've last visited this page to write a post.

I was and still am very busy with life ( though, it's partly due to laziness) hence not able to find time to sit down, bersembang di internet nor update this blog. Eve is also tired as she's working her ass off.. one more month or less and she'll be free of Jones. then it may be my turn! :D

Less than three week's to O's (may the good Lord bless me )

all I can say that i study for at lest 12 hours a day, yes including school hours. 7 am go sch start studying all the way to most of e times 3 hours. actually i also dont know what i studying. i just study, to take away the worry and frown on my forehead.

however, thanks to God's mighty servant, Pastor Kong Hee, my Saturday turned my studying routine into a journey towards achieving something for God. Now, i don't find studying as something i have to do, but I know tt at the end of the day, God will grant me his plan and his will.

I'm posting a post because Nah asked me too. hahhahah. just kidding.

Swimming in a Market

I just got back from a swimming trip with Paulina & my arms are like seriously breaking.

So tired!!

This proves something serious. I'm out of shape.

hahah! but, i dont really care.

Just one thing that I want to share wit ya'll about my experience just now at the pool.

It is me, or is it just the way Singaporean kids are being brought up that is puzzling me?

I think it's the way parents bring up their kids nowadays.

The moment I entered Bedok swimming complex, I thought I entered Bedok market.

There were so many children but not many youngsters in the pool.

The children were at different parts of the pool, grouped into groups and were led by their swimming instructor. they were busy diving, kicking, b

ack-stroking, breast-stroking etc.

Things were just so messy.

We could hardly swim because whenever we want to, we could see so many heads popping out alternately and they were coming from all directions.

All we could swim was 2 metres then bump into some kid, another metre then kena kick, another then kena splash.

IT WAS SUPER ANNOYING!

The funny thing was, some groups of children were wearing those funny looking pyjamas to swim. hahaha i think it's a culture here. yeah i know survival method blahblah but can't they get a more appropriate looking outfit?

it was hilarious.

so i suggest that if you want to swim, do choose a time where there are NO kids for I've learnt it the hard way. We were swimming in the adults pool but i heard people asking, ''Is this adult or childrens' pool?''

So now...I'm gonna get myself Starbucks and hope that someone could give me a full-body massage.

This is a tribute to my AWESOME big sister- namely, Michelle Soh.

Initially, I personally thought in my heart that your choice of moving to KL to further your studies and giving up your place in Singapore was a rather foolish thing to do. But now, you proved me wrong.

I'm in awe to see how much God has used you over there. You have brought joy and love to so many friends over there- christians and non-christians alike. I was and still am very very happy to see you so happy over there. God granted you great friends, roommates(last time), housemates(now) and great church! So happy for you sis. Most importantly, I see how much you grew spiritually and you are the epitome of what I want to achieve in my spiritual life too. Being able to preach, even though to a small group, and being an awesome childrens' church teacher, you really inspire me! I believe not only me, but to many others too who have always looked up to you since a long time ago.

Your recent performance in CHCKL's 10 anniversary is really mind-blowing! So proud to have a sister like you (: continue to shine for him and I believe that God has more important tasks for you which will help you grow up and out of obstacles stronger and better!

Today, Ps Kong delivered another powerful yet awesome message.

He showed us how technology has evolved, making it possible for us to clap just once for the light to on. Yes, like how we always act when we're young, thinking that only magicians can do that. Clap clap. Lights on. He demonstrated to us by bringing a lamp and when we clapped, it turned on! when we clap again, it turned off! Amazing!

He linked this to how our God is a motion-sensitive God. If we take the initiative to move and do something, He will in turn do something. We cannot expect Him to just DO what we asks for. We have to DO something first. Whatever he said hit me hard on the face. Time to wake up people!

Even before the altar call, while he was still speaking to us, saying that if we're facing severe problems in life..if we want to draw closer to God...(continues speaking) hundreds of people started walking down the aisle! When he counted to 3, half of the congregation were already down there. This is the first time I see the people of God being so desperate for God. The Holy Spirit was indeed in the main hall today. Therefore, I believe that today's service was one of the best Sunday service!

Remember, draw near to God & He'll draw near to you.

One day in JB

I've decided that I'm too lazy too post the post I was supposed to and I'm gonna post about my trip back to JB today! A super impromptu trip.

So this was what happened: Yesterday, I was supposed to take a short nap and go for a jog. So I slept at 4.45 and to my utmost horror, when I woke up, the clock ticked 9.40 pm. I frozed, unable to comprehend what was happening. I felt my world turned upside down, my entire schedule being wrecked by my beauty sleep.

Still, I managed to gather my composure and get back on track. Did what i needed to until around 4.30 am and told myself that i most probably should get some slp. I found it too hard to contain my excitement though. So i woke at 5.30 am, packed and headed back home. Reached JB at 7.30 and finally reached home at 8 (: ahhh so good to be home.

Had a heart-warming breakfast at the all-fav Sayed, brought Skip & Cook to grooming, visited grandma, ate her yummy food head back home to rest and it was time to leave. haha. Back to Singapore! It wasnt that bad thou

My life has been pretty exciting and i thank God for that.

This post is about my sch's TEACHERS' DAY & my rendezvous with Stephanie!

Tea-time at Jones the Grocer @ Dempsey Road.

Met up with awesome Steph today at Eve's working place. Yes, as mentioned above, it's at the Jones. Lovely place to work as the working environment is good and the people there are nice (: though the prices of food there are more for the upper class people, it's reasonable because you pay for quality not quantity. We ate so lil' yet we were satisfied! :D

Had a wonderful chat session with her, filling each other with exciting and sad news.

Today was a rather nice day for me.

I visited Church of Singapore's childrens church and met the friends whom i got to know during the Batam trip, such as Desirae, Luke & Gavin. Coincidentally, they were having teachers' day lunch also and Aunt Cindy, a good friend of my mum, insist that i joined them. so i did! and had s sumptuous meal @ Seoul Garden, Marina Square. Then I went shopping for Jack's present, QY's present, teachers day present.

Came back feeling so super duper full and it was time for my nap. haha, slept all the way till the sky turned dark. Lazy to go for dinner. & the consequence of that?

Feeling damn hungry now. my hunger pangs are killing me!

shall get my snacks to sustain my hunger. I dont know how I'm gonna sleep tonight.

time really flies & it's been almost 2 years since we became friends and practically see each other everyday. God's amazing. He placed different people with different characters in my life for so many reasons that sometimes we tend to look at the downside of this and not look at the good things that are yet to come.. Even though there were many rough patches ( & there are still now) through Sue, I've become spiritually stronger, more diligent & hardworking, a lil smarter, more knowledgeable and more mature.

I learnt and am still learning how to share, love, tolerate, respect and help one another. It's true how when someone step out of their comfort zone, we are able to see things differently, in an entire different perspective. And this is really how someone grows. Not just stay stagnant in your comfort zone and take the things in your life for granted.

I did not regret leaving home and coming here and I believe the entire Asean cohort would agree with me.

It's the weekend! Go out, get some fresh air and get ready for a new week (:

An open letter to the Education Minister from a Secondary 4 student

Dear Mr Heng,

I am a Secondary Four student at Nan Chiau High School, and am due to take my O Levels this year. Being shown first-hand what the education system is like, especially from a fairly unflattering point of view, has made me realise much about the education system that I do not like. Of course, I am fully aware that no education system is perfect, yet in the spirit of transformation the PAP has hopefully adopted since the 2011 General Elections, I write this letter to you in the hope that some of these problems with our system will indeed be changed, or if not, at least reviewed.

I speak just for myself, and not for all other graduating students in Singapore when I say this, but I do feel strongly about many methods being employed in secondary schools, especially for graduating classes. For one, I have come to realise the serious emphasis the education system has placed on factual memorisation. Perhaps it is just used in my school, or maybe even a method most autonomous or government schools apply, but based on personal observation, I have come to the conclusion that students are often not taught to ask ‘Why?’

Children are curious and inquisitive, asking their parents questions many parents themselves are not able to answer. As a parent yourself, I believe you can testify to this. Too often, I have heard toddler cousins asking their parents why the grass on my front lawn is green, and how their baby sister was created, or why fruit punch is reddish-pink. I therefore strongly believe that the education system is indeed stifling to a child’s inquisitive and curious mind.

Albert Einstein once said: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.” Yet, what is it we are doing to our students today? We are training them not to question, Mr Heng.

I once had to do a Chemistry paper in which I was asked ‘Why?’ for many things, such as ‘Why is carbon a non-metal?’

Perhaps it is just my school’s teaching methods, but for the life of me, I was never once taught why carbon was a non-metal. Since I started with Chemistry in Secondary Three, I learnt that the staircase line divided the Periodic Table into metals and non-metals, and that metals and metals took part in metallic bonding.

That, I believe, is one of the key flaws in the education system. This is a flaw that is not only serious, but also has wide-reaching effects. The most common definition of education is the one provided by the Cambridge dictionary, which states that education is ‘the process of teaching or learning in a school or college, or the knowledge that you get from this’, but I prefer the one found in the students’ favourite dictionary. Education itself, as defined by Dictionary.com, is ‘the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.”

The beauty of education is to ask ‘Why?’ and have those questions answered. To be aware of knowledge one never knew about. To constantly discover new insights and new things every day, to answer questions lurking in our minds. But far too often, we are taught not to ask why, to just memorise. To get an A1, all we have to do is memorise our textbooks inside out and upside down, and be able to regurgitate them on the very day, tweaking them minimally to answer the questions asked. In the pursuit for grades, I believe we have lost the beauty of education: The ability to ask ‘Why?’

Maybe I’m still a teenager. Still sixteen, still not quite mature in my thinking processes and ways of speech. Maybe I don’t know exactly what type of education system I want, but I know one thing: I want a system where I’m not a product on a factory line, but a real human with an inquisitive mind, always taught to ask and wonder. Memorizing is indeed the fastest way out. Fastest way to good grades, the fastest way out of poverty, the fastest way to a good job and a good salary and a good life. The fastest way to a First World Country. But is it really the best way to educate?

Minister, the purpose of education is to ‘prepare oneself or others intellectually for mature life’. Singapore is a First World Country with developing quartenary industries and a high Human Development Index. It has a stable economy, a thriving political landscape and top-notch healthcare systems. No longer can we adopt the same methods it took us to get here. Instead, what the country needs is more thinkers, more creators. People who dare to ask ‘Why?’ and ‘Why not?’. People who are not slaves to change, but create the change. How do we train the leaders of the nation, if many of our brightest young minds are not bright because they can think, but are bright simply because they know how to maneuver their way around school exams and the education system? It is no surprise then, that many of our local policies are all recycled from those of other countries. They lack imagination and creativity, because it is my deep-set belief that other than curiosity, those are the other things the local education system kills.

My friends are constantly telling me that Singapore has no talent. They are constantly swooning over foreign celebrities, actors and actresses, but in comparison, the support and fanbase for our own local talents are negligible, save for a few. I do not believe that Singaporeans lack talent. In fact, I truly believe Singaporeans are a talented bunch. Art, music, dance, you name it, I can name someone who’s good at it. So what is the problem here, you may ask. The problem is that Singaporean youths are often not taught as individuals with separate talents, but as a collective who are all the same. Often, we suppress our own natural talents for what the education system wants. I have had so many Chemistry and Biology answers marked completely wrong just because I used my own words to express the same idea. ‘Cambridge wants this, so we will give them this’ appears to be the mindset of most of the teachers, who throw us model answers to be memorised. We cannot change the markers at the University of Cambridge, but I am sure you would agree with me that this is not the way to educate youths. Many times, in English, I have been told to follow a certain structure and certain format for even free writing tests. Youths are brimming with creativity and fresh ideas, but we lack that same outlet to express them. Why do you think social networking is such a crazy trend? Social networking gives students a voice that the education system never gave them.

How do we cultivate talent in this manner, by not giving youths a voice? By memorizing tons and tons of model answers and essays to be submitted? In this way, the education system is sending a message to Singaporean youths that it is not wrong to have a voice, but it is wrong to use this voice in the system of education. What it does not realise is that it is the education system that is supposed to give Singaporean students their voice! By educating students, we are giving them the ability and knowledge to speak their minds, yet take this privilege from them away all at the same time.

Is this really what education is? Stifling voices in favour of appeasing examiners, memorizing facts to get that A1, yet all of these are forgotten by the time we start work?

Call me naive, because I am still young, but I believe an education is not about imparting facts and figures and making students digest it all. It’s about shaping a mindset. Creating a person. Nurturing what God gave each one of us. I fear that in the pursuit for the Singaporean Dream, we have lost the initial purpose of education: to create a person, who is opinionated and articulate and creative and imaginative. Who is not afraid to think out of the box and come up with new ideas and policies.

We may be a First World Country, but if our education system still holds the belief that we are in a Second or Third World Country, and need to furiously cram facts in our head to get out of the cycle of poverty fast, then we will never truly raise First World leaders. Leaders who can think about the solution to an exact problem, and not recite whatever they learnt in their political science or economics courses in university.

Another gaping flaw in the education system is the premise of character development. From the way it is taught in schools, it often feels like schools are introducing character development just purely for the sake of it, and not for inculcating values important to working life.

Mr Heng, we are taught Civics and Moral Education from a FILE, and from TEXTBOOKS. We are given CME EXAMS. Surely you would agree this is not the way to go about teaching values? Values cannot be taught, so the education system tries to force it down our throats by teaching us morally-correct behaviour.

Since Social Studies in primary school, we have been fed the system’s easy way out. Instead of actually having values instilled into us, we are taught to give morally-correct answers. We are taught to help old ladies cross roads when they look like they need assistance. Though the last sentence may be a bit of an exaggeration, one cannot deny that it is true. Character is not the knowledge that we should help the old lady cross the road, but the actual act of helping her do it.

The sad but true reality is that most teenagers know that the old lady needs assistance, but would rather continue checking Facebook statuses and giving Twitter updates on their smartphones rather than going over and helping the poor soul.

Granted, who am I to make a generalisation and say that all teenagers are this way? I know that there are teenagers and youths out there who are truly compassionate, who would truly go out of their way to help, but I have no arguments in my bag of tricks to argue for the stand that this behaviour is taught by Civics and Moral Education lessons in schools. Rather, more often than not, it is good parenting that leads a child to do so, not CME lessons.

Teachers often ‘eat up’ our CME lessons to have their own lessons, for one. Though this may not be a commonplace occurence, it happens extremely often for graduating classes when teachers are rushing to finish up the syllabus. Again, the system sends out another message: As long as you can get all A1s for your O levels, your character does not matter.

I am sure this is not the intended message, but it is certainly what most of us are hearing. The common mentality is ‘So what if you have a good character? You’re failing most of your subjects.”

I find this rather peculiar, because I for one have always found that with a strong character, good grades come naturally afterwards. With self-discipline and self-motivation, a student can certainly get good grades. Thus, character development should in fact be more important than academic education, because after all, an education is not about pure academics. Instilling values in a child is certainly an important part of preparing them for maturity, for maturity does not come with grades, but with wisdom and growth no amount of midnight-oil-burning can develop.

As a Secondary Four student, I experience first-hand the ugliness of the flaws the education system has. In fact, I spent one hour and forty-five minutes writing you this letter. Though I am not sure if you will ever get to read it ever in this lifetime, but this is something that I believe in. I believe in being the change I want to see in the world, or at least in my environment, as cliched as that sounds. Every one else will tell me that this is a waste of time, because I have Preliminary examinations next week and I could have been studying instead of typing this long Facebook note out.

This is the type of education system the Ministry of Education’s policies have cultivated. A system where fighting for things one believes in are seen as a ‘waste of time’, where reading anything non-school-related is seen as yet another waste of time. Is this the type of education a First World Country should have, one where students’ thoughts and abilities to express themselves are confined within the front and back cover of their textbooks, where it is better to be passive and just study hard under the system than fight to change it and waste one’s time, where having your own thoughts is a liability.

Have we lost the true meaning of education somewhere in the paper chase, buried under all the degrees and diplomas and paychecks? Or were we lost all along as to what education truly means?

I have not given up hope that there is still space for change. I have not submitted myself to accepting that ‘this is the Singapore system and I cannot do anything about it’. I am fighting for the changes I want to see in the best way that I can, because I believe that someday, my children will be educated in such a way that they are taught to never stop asking, and to always care about the people around them. I believe that you have the power to make these changes happen, and if not, at least a thorough review of the policies made by your predecessors.

Today, 'dilemma' is the intruder of my life.

I never felt so down yet at the same time so lost before.

Things took an unexpected turn and in the end, the question which surfaced in my mindwas, ' Is this God's will?'

This is about my future. My life. What I will be. What He wants me to be.

Thanks for all the encouragement, friends. I'll bear in mind that if I have faith, whatever path I take, God will make something out of that path for me to walk through, stronger and better. He will never forsake me, nor leave me.
